1ST GRADE aRT: Who We ARE: students make connections through inquiry, discussion, and reflection to design a symbol that represents a group with a common interest. art teks connections: drawing (design), color treatment, outline; copying designs, using repetition of lines, shapes, and color. Students will create a small clay tile or medallion and will draw a symbol of a group that they identify with. When dried, the piece will be fired and painted, to be hung on a wall or displayed otherwise. how we organize ourselves: in art, students explore the various ways people create structures according to their needs and location in communities (rural, suburban, urban). students use basic and natural shapes to express the structures of buildings. a bulletin board of student created structures illustrates this concept. where we are in place and time: students will explore a variety of map concepts and design from earliest times (cave paintings) to present day (Digital). they will produce several maps, including: neighborhood, museum, and treasure maps. Maps will include: compass roses, and clearly written legends with symbols. sharing the planet: students inquire into the habitats , habits. , and challenges faced by sea turtles. StudenTs practice drawing sea turtle forms and create shell paTterns. A collage results as a series oF drawings is cut and pasted, using consruction paper, color marker aNd sticks to complete an underwater "reef scene" where turtles feed and rest To prepare for transOceanic voyages.
