2nd Grade:
How We Organize Ourselves
Students practice lettering in a variety of ways, through repetition of letter shapes in words. Inquiry into the history of written words, the jobs of calligraphers, tools and equipment used for manuscript (writing) as well as printmaking provides the background and prompts for development of individual styles. Each student will use his/her "font" as the name of their game, and will create a playing board and various parts. Students will write a minimum of six rules for the game, thus making a valid connection with their first classroom unit of study.
Sharing the Planet
students explore the concepts of liquid (water) as it affects properties of paint, from: solid (tempera cakes) to liquid (hydration) to film (painted surface with dehydration).
This concept was discussed and inquired about during the previous unit that involved clay.
How We Express Ourselves
Students make the connections between story telling and pictures by exploring a variety of author/illustrators as they develop their own characters for a fable or folk story. Students will draw and color illustrations for the story they are writing in class as well as create a simple puppet from a character in the story.
