4TH GRADE:
WHO WE ARE:
AS STUDENTS REFLECT THROUGH INQUIRY ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, THEY WILL PRACTICE SEVERAL ART ELEMENTS THROUGH A SERIES OF SELF PORTRAITS: CONTOUR LINES, VALUE AND SHADING, AND COLOR TREATMENT. A FINAL SELF PORTRAIT WILL BE DONE ON ACETATE FILM (TRANSFERRED FROM A SKETCHBOOK DRAWING). STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO REVEAL AN EMOTION THAT CHARACTERIZES THEM ALONG THE LINES OF IB PRINCIPLES AND ATTITUDES.
Where We Are in Place and TIme: Students make a connection with the topic of explorers as we take a look at the phenomenons of the Silk Road (from China through Malaysia, the Middle East, Europe and Northern Africa). Students create a drawing and a 3-D model of a "shoe" or boot that they might have worn as an explorer or tradesperson during those centuries. A paper model of the shoe is made and then the ceramic piece is constructed from a pattern. Hand building methods include: slab and coil construction.
How We Express Ourselves:
Students inquire as to various forms of communication through Art media such as: traditional methods (drawings, paintings, sculpture) as well as through digital art. Through a closer look at what backgrounds artists need to express ideas through media, they will discover the freedoms as well as the limitations placed on artists by society. How museums, galleries, and the media support the arts is also addressed. Drawings for public places will be explored through sketchbook studies.
